DSPG

The Data Science for the Public Good (DSPG) Program is a summer research experience for undergraduate and graduate students where students

  • participate in a data science bootcamp:

    • Code Management (e.g., version control with Git and GitHub)
    • Containers (Docker)
    • Programming (R programming language and statistical environment)
    • Databases (PostgreSQL + PostGIS)
    • Data ingestion (e.g., I/O, web harvest through RESTful/GraphQL API, HTML scraping or webdriver)
    • Data manipulation (e.g., Regex, datetime, tidyverse)
    • Visualization (e.g., ggplot2, Leaflet, Shiny)
    • Regression / Machine Learning
  • work on a sponsored research project with a federal, state, or local government entity such as

    • National Science Foundation (NSF) National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES)
    • United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS)
    • Fairfax County Health and Human Services
    • Army Research Institute (ARI)
    • Arlington County Police Department
  • obtain professional training through development workshops and seminars

  • interact with horizontally and vertically integrated teams with dedicated graduate students, postdocs, and faculty

  • enjoy a wide variety of events the Washington D.C. greater metro area has to offer

  • publication opportunities

  • these are paid experiences

Program Details

  • Program Dates:
    • Graduate Fellows: May 26 - August 7
    • Undergraduate Interns: June 1 - August 7
  • Location: Arlington, VA (next to the Rosslyn Metro Station)
  • Call size:
    • 10+ Undergraduate students
    • 5+ Graduate students

How to Apply

Undergraduate students in any discipline and graduate students (MS or PhD) with quantitative/analytical skills enrolled at any U.S. university are encouraged to apply. The positions (10+ undergraduate interns and 5+ graduate students) will be located at the Biocomplexity Institute’s Arlington, VA office. These are paid positions.
